Hearing loss and its affiliated terminology can sometimes be difficult to navigate.Following are some of the more commonly used terms which we provide as a resource to help better understand certain conditions.Acoustic Neurinoma is a benign tumor that has been known to contribute to hearing loss.Ampulla is the section of the semicircular canal where the sense organ for head rotation is located.Auditory Neuropathy is a condition where nerves are unable to process sound.AIED is an acronym which stands for Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease.CAPD is an acronym for Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Individuals with CAPD are functionally deaf while also being medically hearing.CHARGE Syndrome is a craniofacial disorder which results in hearing loss (as well as vision loss).Cochlea is the spiral-shaped hole located in the temporal bone where sound energy is received and nerve impulses are created to encode hearing.Conductive Hearing Loss is the severe inability for sound to be conducted or transferred to the inner ear.Congenital is a type of hearing loss that has been present since birth.Cookie Bite Hearing Loss is frequently hereditary and is typically discovered in childhood at which time parents are also discovered to have problems hearing mild frequencies.Glue Ear is the result of an untreated ear infection which results in hearing loss.Goldenhar Syndrome affects the face and ears and typically requires surgery to address missing or malformed ears and hearing loss.Hearing Loss Categories are used to define and classify the degree or severity of hearing loss classifications include mild, moderate, severe, and profound.Labyrinth is the organ of balance which is located in the inner ear.Mastoid is the hard, boney structure behind the ear.Otitis Media is an inflammation of the middle ear that is typically caused by infection.Ototoxicity is the term that defines what happens when certain drugs or other substances result in hearing loss.Presbycusis is the medical name for age-related hearing loss.Sensorineural Hearing Loss is a loss of hearing caused by damage to the sensory cells, nerve fibers and/or the tiny hair cells in the cochlea of the inner ear.Sudden Deafness is as it sounds when deafness comes upon an individual suddenly, typically from explosion or viral infection.Usher Syndrome is a genetic condition that causes hearing and vision loss.Treacher Collins Syndrome is much like Charge Syndrome which is a craniofacial disorder that causes deafness.Vestibule is the boney cavity of the inner ear.A great resource for additional information in better understanding the terminology associated with hearing loss is to contact the Hearing Loss Association of America.
